![]() Myst is a 2021 remake for VR which was subsequently updated for "flat" viewing.Still worth trying for a hardcore fan, but not my recommendation for a first experience. It's an interesting entry in the series but IMHO has neither the integrity of Myst: Masterpiece Edition nor the graphical impressiveness of Myst it's sort of a "worst of both worlds" version at this point. The graphics are arguably a bit primitive by modern standards and not as atmospheric or immersive as the most recent Myst release (see next bullet). RealMyst: Masterpiece Edition is a 2014 remake/bugfix of a 2000 real-time 3D remake of Myst with some minor additions (weather effects, for example) and one significant addition (a new area). It is definitely recommendable as a first playthrough experience. Aesthetically, it has the somewhat forlorn, mysterious, desaturated mood which many players loved. Navigation is via clicking, slideshow-style, which can be occasionally disorienting for some people but is quick and gives you the precise perspectives originally intended. Spiritually it is the original version, and is still very playable. Myst: Masterpiece Edition is a 2000 refresh of the 1993 original and is basically identical but with better color depth, remastered audio, etc. There are three current versions of Myst worth considering. I might check some comparison videos between this and the 2021 version first though to see how much difference the graphics make to me (hopefulyl spoiler free), although I am a 90s gamer originally so graphics aren't a turn off at all The most recent just called Myst is 2021 but seems to be for VR, I don't use VR so is this also playable with a normal screen? There is also the original 1993 version which I am wary of as I know navigation in those days was pretty janky.Ĭan someone give me an unbiased or reasoned recommendation beyond unhelpful comments such as "this one is better" or "play the original just because it is the original"ĮDIT: Thanks all, from the comments I think I will go for the Myst Masterpiece edition, as it seems like that is closest to the original that I will expect. So I go to look for it on Steam or GOG and there are too many different versions. So I keep hearing people talk about Myst as one of the grandfathers of the puzzle game genre, which I love, and it seems like it is one that I always missed back in the day.
